If you’ve recently learned you’re autistic, ADHD, or both, you may start hearing two words constantly: masking and burnout.
The definitions can sound simple.
Masking is often described as hiding or compensating for neurodivergent traits. Burnout is often described as profound exhaustion after prolonged stress.
But those definitions don’t necessarily help you recognize either one in yourself.
You might instead be asking:
I’ve been doing this my entire life. Why can’t I do it anymore?
Maybe noise suddenly feels unbearable. Keeping the house clean takes more effort. Going to the store is exhausting. Work that you once handled becomes difficult to organize. Conversations take more energy. You forget things you used to remember. You need more time alone.
Things that once seemed automatic suddenly require conscious effort.
That can feel like you’re losing abilities.
But there may be another question worth asking:
How was I accomplishing all of this before---and what did it actually cost me?
Masking Can Be Much More Than Pretending to Be Someone Else
When people hear the word masking, they often imagine consciously hiding autistic behaviors.
Don’t stim.
Make eye contact.
Smile.
Act interested.
Don’t talk too much about your interests.
Those can certainly be forms of masking, but they are only part of the picture.
Research generally uses terms such as camouflaging to describe strategies autistic people use to minimize visible autistic characteristics or compensate for difficulties in order to meet social expectations. A systematic review by Cook and colleagues found that camouflaging can involve multiple strategies and can sometimes provide social benefits or a sense of agency, while also being associated with substantial psychological costs.[1]
That distinction matters.
Masking doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve spent your life consciously pretending.
Some adaptations may have become so practiced that you stopped recognizing them as adaptations at all.
You may have learned:
- how long you’re supposed to look at someone’s eyes
- which facial expression belongs in which situation
- how to tolerate environments that overwhelm you
- how to suppress movements that help you regulate yourself
- how to mentally rehearse conversations
- how to force yourself through executive-function difficulties
- how to remember everything without external supports
- how to ignore discomfort until the task is finished
- how to keep functioning when your body is telling you it needs something different
Eventually, the strategy can simply feel like how you function.
And if you don’t know you’re compensating for something, you probably aren’t keeping track of what that compensation costs.
The Invisible Cost of Looking Like You’re Functioning
One of the biggest changes in how I understand my own burnout came from separating the result from the process required to produce the result.
Other people could see the result.
I went to work.
I solved problems.
I raised kids.
I maintained responsibilities.
I built a career.
From the outside, those things can become evidence that someone is capable of continuing to function that way.
But they don’t tell you how much effort was required internally to make those things happen.
Imagine two people climbing the same hill.
They both reach the top.
If you only measure whether they reached the top, they appear equally capable.
But one person may have walked up a paved trail while the other climbed over rocks carrying a backpack.
The outcome doesn’t tell you the cost.
That distinction became extremely important for me.
I had developed coping mechanisms throughout my life that allowed me to produce the expected outcomes. I didn’t necessarily know they were coping mechanisms. They were simply how I got things done.
Until they stopped working.
Burnout Can Make the Hidden Work Visible
One of the most confusing parts of burnout can be the feeling that abilities are disappearing.
Things you previously did without thinking may suddenly become difficult.
This experience appears prominently in autistic burnout research.
In a foundational qualitative study, Raymaker and colleagues described autistic burnout as involving chronic exhaustion, loss of skills, and reduced tolerance to stimulus, developing from chronic life stress combined with insufficient support or relief.[2]
A much larger systematic review published in 2025 examined 48 studies of autistic burnout. Across the literature, researchers found recurring descriptions of severe exhaustion and increased disability. Contributors included sensory and social overwhelm, camouflaging, lack of accommodations, and other forms of sustained demand. Rest, solitude, sensory relief, self-understanding, and support appeared among reported factors associated with recovery.[3]
That research gave me another way to think about what I experienced.
I originally experienced some of these changes as losing skills.
But I began asking a different question:
Did I lose the ability---or did I lose the coping mechanism that allowed me to access that ability the way I used to?
Those aren’t necessarily the same thing.
Importantly, research does not establish that every loss of functioning during autistic burnout is simply the disappearance of a compensatory strategy. Burnout itself is associated with reduced functioning and increased disability.[2][3]
But the distinction can still be useful when examining your own life.
Instead of immediately asking:
How do I force myself to function the old way again?
you can ask:
What was the old way actually requiring from me?
That question changed a lot for me.
What If the Old System Wasn’t Sustainable?
When something that used to work stops working, the instinct is often to restore it.
Try harder.
Get organized.
Push through.
Become disciplined.
Get back to normal.
But burnout raises an uncomfortable possibility:
What if getting back to exactly how things were recreates the conditions that contributed to burnout?
That doesn’t mean every coping strategy you developed was harmful.
Many of mine were incredibly effective.
They helped me build a life.
The problem was that I often evaluated a strategy according to only one measurement:
Did it work?
I wasn’t measuring:
How much stress did it require?
How much sensory discomfort did I tolerate?
How much information was I holding in my head?
How much conscious monitoring was happening?
How long did I need to recover afterward?
Was there an easier way to produce the same result?
Once I started looking at those questions, burnout became more than something I wanted to escape.
It became information.
Burnout Changed What I Could Ignore
Sensory input became one of the clearest examples.
Noise had always affected me.
But I hadn’t necessarily understood how much work I was doing to tolerate it.
During burnout, that tolerance changed dramatically.
Sounds became harder to filter.
Multiple sources of noise could become overwhelming. Environmental stimulation that I once pushed through became much more difficult to ignore.
That experience is consistent with descriptions in autistic burnout research, where reduced tolerance to sensory stimuli and sensory overwhelm appear repeatedly.[2][3]
My first reaction was essentially:
How do I make myself tolerate this again?
Eventually, I started experimenting with almost the opposite question:
What happens if I stop requiring myself to tolerate unnecessary input?
That led to one of the more unusual experiments I tried during burnout.
I Started Experimenting With Less Input
At one point, I created an intentionally low-sensory environment.
I reduced visual stimulation.
I reduced sound.
I stayed awake rather than simply going to sleep.
The goal wasn’t to disappear from the world.
I wanted to see what happened if I remained consciously present while dramatically reducing how much information I was asking myself to process.
At the time, I described this as trying to give my nervous system a break.
That phrase still describes my subjective experience well, but it’s important to distinguish my model from what research actually establishes.
Autistic burnout has not been scientifically demonstrated to be a literal “overworked nervous system” that can simply be switched off and recharged.
What research does support is the underlying observation: sensory and social overwhelm are commonly reported contributors to autistic burnout, while sensory relief, solitude, reduced demands, and accommodations appear repeatedly in autistic people’s descriptions of recovery.[3]
So rather than saying:
I needed to shut down my nervous system,
a more evidence-aligned description might be:
I was deliberately reducing the amount of sensory and cognitive demand I was asking myself to process.
The practical difference might sound small.
Scientifically, it’s important.
Controlling the Nervous System vs. Controlling the Load
This eventually became one of the most useful distinctions I’ve found.
You can’t simply issue a command to your nervous system:
Calm down.
But you can sometimes change what you’re asking your system to deal with.
That can mean changing the environment.
Reducing unnecessary sound.
Using headphones.
Lowering visual stimulation.
Breaking work into smaller periods.
Externalizing things you’re trying to remember.
Creating routines.
Removing unnecessary decisions.
Allowing movement instead of spending energy suppressing it.
Leaving recovery time after demanding activities.
Reducing simultaneous demands.
These aren’t all the same kind of intervention.
Some reduce sensory demand.
Some reduce executive-function demand.
Some reduce social monitoring.
Some reduce cognitive load.
Some change physiological arousal.
But they share an important principle:
Instead of demanding that your brain become better at tolerating the environment, sometimes you can change the environment or the demand.
That creates another question:
What can I stop making my brain do unnecessarily?
Regulation Doesn’t Always Mean “Calming Down”
This distinction matters when talking about the nervous system.
“Regulation” often gets translated into relaxation.
But those aren’t identical concepts.
Sometimes the goal isn’t becoming completely calm.
It may simply be changing the amount or type of demand you’re experiencing enough that you can remain present and functional.
Breathing is one example where there is actual physiological evidence.
A systematic review of slow-breathing research found measurable changes involving cardiovascular and autonomic functioning, including heart-rate variability, along with changes in measures related to emotional state.[4]
That doesn’t mean breathing exercises can cure burnout.
They can’t.
It means breathing is one example of something we can voluntarily change that can influence physiological processes involved in arousal.
For me, breathing therefore belongs in a much larger toolbox.
So do headphones.
So does reducing sensory input.
So does externalizing memory.
So does taking something that requires ten mental steps and redesigning it so it requires three.
The point isn’t:
Here’s the trick that regulates your nervous system.
The point is:
Start noticing what increases the load and what decreases it.
The Goal Isn’t Necessarily to Stop Masking
There’s another trap here.
Once people discover masking, they sometimes encounter the idea that the solution is simply to unmask completely.
I don’t think that’s realistic for everyone.
Masking can serve a purpose.
Research reflects that complexity. Camouflaging has been associated with negative outcomes, including exhaustion and poorer mental health, but autistic people also describe circumstances where it provides social access, protection, control, or agency.[1]
The better question may not be:
How do I stop masking?
It may be:
Where am I masking, what purpose is it serving, and what is it costing me?
There may be environments where you decide the cost is worth it.
There may be others where it isn’t.
There may also be behaviors you don’t realize you’re suppressing until you deliberately give yourself permission not to suppress them.
This turns unmasking from an identity performance into an experiment in cost reduction.
Start Looking for the Expensive Parts
After discovering you’re neurodivergent, it can be tempting to analyze your entire personality.
You don’t have to.
Start smaller.
When something feels disproportionately exhausting, frustrating, overwhelming, or difficult, become curious about the process.
Ask:
What exactly am I doing right now?
Maybe grocery shopping isn’t simply grocery shopping.
Maybe you’re:
remembering the list,
navigating people,
filtering fluorescent lighting,
processing music,
ignoring carts moving around you,
making purchasing decisions,
tracking money,
changing plans when something isn’t available,
monitoring whether you’re blocking the aisle,
and trying not to appear overwhelmed.
The task may look simple because everyone calls the whole thing “going grocery shopping.”
Your brain doesn’t experience labels.
It experiences demands.
Once you can identify those demands individually, you can start changing them individually.
Order groceries online.
Wear headphones.
Use a written list.
Go during quieter hours.
Use the same store.
Create a standard list.
Have someone else do part of the task.
None of those strategies means you’ve become less capable.
You’re changing the architecture of the task.
Accommodations Can Be More Than Official Accommodations
Before understanding my neurodivergence, I tended to think of accommodations as something formally granted to disabled people.
But many accommodations are simply better system design.
If I constantly forget something, I can continue demanding that my brain remember it.
Or I can put the information somewhere my brain doesn’t have to hold it.
If noise consumes attention, I can continue practicing tolerating noise.
Or I can reduce the noise when reducing it doesn’t interfere with anything important.
If forty minutes of uninterrupted work causes my attention to collapse, forcing sixty minutes isn’t automatically progress.
Maybe the better system is twenty minutes of work, a reset, and another twenty.
The important shift is from:
What should I be able to tolerate?
to:
What actually helps me function sustainably?
That’s a very different measurement of success.
Burnout Can Distort the Comparison
There’s another complication.
If you’re currently burned out, you may be comparing yourself to the most capable version of yourself you remember.
That comparison can become brutal.
I used to work all day.
I used to handle crowds.
I used to keep everything organized.
I used to be able to push through this.
Those statements may all be true.
But they leave out an important variable:
What did doing those things require from you?
Maybe you could work all day and then couldn’t function at home.
Maybe you handled crowds while remaining tense the entire time.
Maybe organization required constant anxiety about forgetting something.
Maybe “pushing through” meant ignoring sensory or physical signals until you were somewhere safe enough to collapse.
The ability to survive a demand doesn’t automatically tell you whether the demand was sustainable.
That doesn’t make your previous accomplishments fake.
They were real.
It means the complete story includes what producing them required.
Burnout Isn’t a Moral Failure
This is where understanding masking can change the meaning of burnout.
Without context, declining function can easily become a character judgment:
I’m lazy.
I’ve stopped trying.
I’m becoming dependent.
I’m going backward.
But if your previous functioning involved years of increasingly expensive compensation, another interpretation becomes possible:
The system I was using may no longer be able to produce the same output at the same cost.
That doesn’t tell you exactly why you’re struggling. Burnout can overlap with depression, anxiety, sleep problems, physical illness, trauma, medication effects, occupational burnout, and many other conditions. A significant or unexplained change in functioning deserves appropriate medical or mental-health evaluation rather than automatically being attributed to autism or ADHD.
But recognizing burnout gives you another possibility to investigate.
And, importantly, another set of questions to ask.
You Don’t Have to Rebuild the Same System
This has probably been the biggest shift for me.
When my old coping mechanisms stopped working, I initially wanted them back.
Eventually, I became more interested in building different ones.
Not:
How did I used to force myself through this?
But:
What’s the least stressful way I can realistically accomplish this now?
That doesn’t mean eliminating every difficult thing.
Life doesn’t work that way.
Sometimes we tolerate discomfort because something matters to us.
Sometimes we mask because the environment isn’t safe enough not to.
Sometimes we push through because our kids need something, work needs something, or life simply doesn’t provide another option.
The goal isn’t zero stress.
The goal is knowing where the stress is coming from well enough that you have choices when choices are available.
That is where understanding masking becomes useful.
You begin noticing the machinery underneath your own functioning.
And once you can see the machinery, you can start redesigning pieces of it.
A Different Question to Take With You
If you’ve recently learned you’re neurodivergent and everything suddenly seems harder, you don’t need to immediately determine which parts of you are “masked” and which parts are “authentic.”
Start with something more concrete.
When something takes a lot out of you, ask:
What am I requiring myself to do here?
Then break the task apart.
What sensory input are you processing?
What are you trying to remember?
What are you suppressing?
What social information are you monitoring?
What uncertainty are you managing?
What physical discomfort are you ignoring?
What expectations are you trying to meet?
Which parts are necessary?
Which parts can be changed?
Which parts can be supported?
Which parts were only there because you thought you were supposed to do things that way?
You may discover that some of the things you thought were effortless never actually were.
You had simply become extremely practiced at paying the cost.
Understanding burnout doesn’t automatically restore your capacity.
Understanding masking doesn’t mean you have to remove every mask.
But understanding both can give you something that is difficult to have when you don’t know what’s happening:
information about yourself.
And information creates options.
Instead of only asking:
How do I get back to who I was?
you can begin asking:
Knowing what I know now, how do I want to build the way I function next?

Research Note
Research on autistic burnout and autistic camouflaging has developed substantially, but both remain evolving areas of study. Evidence concerning comparable processes specifically in ADHD is considerably less developed. This article therefore does not assume that findings from autistic burnout research automatically generalize to every ADHD person’s experience.
Where first-person observations in this article extend beyond current evidence---particularly descriptions involving “nervous-system load”---they are presented as a framework for understanding personal experience rather than as established neurological mechanisms.
